Greater Enrichment Program
Charlotte Youth Ballet (CYB) believes that ballet is for all. In collaboration with the Greater Enrichment Program (GEP), the Charlotte Youth Ballet sponsors a free weekly ballet class for children from Merry Oaks, Thomasboro and Ashley Park elementary schools. These budding ballerinas meet each Thursday afternoon at Merry Oaks to explore movement, ballet technique and choreography. The excitement and pride the children feel about their experience is evident as they named themselves Lasting Impressions.
Bethany Williamson, a teacher for Lasting Impressions shared, "The girls in the program are very excited each week to learn everything there is to know about ballet that also includes some of the history that is behind it. I look forward to meeting with the girls. I am impressed with their willingness and attention to learn. They pick up choreography, counts, and vocabulary very well. The team work they learn and showcase is one of the best things to see."
A unique feature of the program is that CYB Company Dancers - our most accomplished student dancers - act as role models and guides to the girls of Lasting Impressions. Tyler Elizabeth Bell, a CYB Company Dancer, says, "I love knowing that sharing my passion can spark passion in another girl."
What Can I do to Help?
You can help by using the Arts and Sciences Council's Power2Give® program to provide the funding needed to make Lasting Impressions a success. Through your donations, we will be able to:
- Fund the salary for a ballet teacher for a weekly, hour-long ballet class.
- Provide funds to purchase new ballet slippers and tights for all of the children.
- Provide tickets for the Charlotte Youth Ballet's production of Nutcracker and Before The Curtain - a behind the scenes look at the ballet.
- Fund a reception after the Nutcracker performance for the children and their families.
- Provide tickets for CYB's production of Coppelia and Before The Curtain - a behind the scenes look at the ballet.
Since 1975, Greater Enrichment Program (GEP) has served more than 10,000 at-risk elementary-aged children in the community by providing a quality after-school enrichment program. Students are given academic, cultural and social instruction in a safe and loving environment. Additional learning opportunities are offered to students and families through GEP's partnerships with more than 20 community organizations.
