Our Mission

The Charlotte Youth Ballet enriches the community through a non-profit, innovative regional ballet company that provides an opportunity to perform in professional-level productions.  By merging youth and professionals, the CYB introduces ballet to diverse audiences to foster life-long support of the arts.  We are delighted to have your dancer audition with us.  Thank you for the opportunity to serve you and your family.

Dancers are REQUIRED to miss school on the Friday of Production week.

AUDITION DATE: CYB Season – Saturday, September 11, 2021

LOCATION: Overcash Hall, Central Piedmont Community College, 2nd Floor lobby/balcony

Central Campus, Uptown (Corner of Kings Drive and Elizabeth Ave)

PARKING: Theater/Guest parking in parking deck behind the building.  Access from 4th Street and Kings Drive.  Parking is free.
ELIGIBILITY: Boys and girls in 3rd grade – Age 25 as of September 1, 2021 with some dance experience and are enrolled in at least one (1) ballet class per week at a dance school of their choice.


POINTE DANCERS- In addition to a successful audition, you must take a MINIMUM of 3 ballet technique and 1 pointe class per week to be cast in a pointe role with CYB.

AUDITION SCHEDULE: 12:00 pm                      Registration Opens on 2nd Floor

12:30pm – 1:20pm        Girls in 3rd and 4th grade and boys in 3rd – 5th grade

1:30pm – 2:30pm          Girls in 5th grade – Age 25, NON-POINTE and boys in 6th – 8th grade

2:45pm – 4:15pm          Girls ages 12 – 25 who are proficient on POINTE and

Boys in High School – age 25

AUDITION FEE: $25 payable online during registration. Fees are non-refundable.
PERFORMANCE FEE: $200 performance fee is assessed for each dancer\per production. This fee is due prior to the first rehearsal unless prior arrangements have been made with Cindy Gruber (cyb@charlotteyouthballet.org).

At least one parent must attend at ONE of the times listed above unless prior arrangements have been made with CYB, by emailing cyb@charlotteyouthballet.org

ATTIRE: Girls:  pink tights, solid colored leotard, ballet or pointe shoes, hair in neat bun, no skirts r leg warmers.
Boys: black tights, solid colored t-shirt, ballet shoes.
NOTIFICATIONS: Dancers will be notified by September 27, 2021 of their acceptance into the CYB.  The cast list will be posted to the website (www.charlotteyouthballet.org) by September 24th, 2021. Dancers are expected to accept all parts awarded. PLEASE NOTE: At times our younger dancers are double cast. This means they may be in 3 shows instead of 6.

Arrive 30 minutes prior to your scheduled audition time.  Dancers need to be dressed, stretched and

warmed up with completed forms. 


Those dancers interested in auditioning but who are unable to attend at the scheduled time should contact

Cindy Gruber at cyb@charlotteyouthballet.org.  Those dancers not at auditions will be cast based

on roles available.

Charlotte Youth Ballet Company Membership


Cast Members are all dancers cast in a role by the Artistic Team to participate in a CYB production. Company dancers are selected from within the Cast Members.  Dancers should indicate their interest in Company membership by completing the Company Audition Form (separate from the general audition form). Stating interest does not guarantee acceptance into company.  Invitations and placement are at the sole discretion of the Artistic Director.  If a dancer has a reduction in the required number of technique or pointe classes during the season, their level within the Company will change.


APPRENTICE:                         Dancers at this level must maintain a minimum of two (2) ballet technique (boys and girls) and one (1) pointe class (girls) per week at the school of their choice during the season. Dancers must be 11 years or older to be considered for apprenticeship.


COMPANY:                             Dancers at this level must demonstrate proficiency on pointe AND maintain a minimum of three (3) ballet technique (boys and girls) and one (1) pointe class (girls) per week at the dance school of their choice during the season. Modern is strongly recommended. Boy dancers must demonstrate technique at the Intermediate level or above. Dancers must be 13 years or older to be considered for Company placement.


SENIOR COMPANY:              Dancers at this level must demonstrate ADVANCED proficiency on pointe AND maintain a minimum of four (4) ballet technique (boys and girls) and two (2) pointe classes (girls) per week at the dance school of their choice during the season. Modern is strongly recommended. Boy dancers must demonstrate Advanced level technique. Consideration for Senior Company placement is based on mastery of technique.


COMMITMENT: Senior Company, Company and Apprentice dancers commit to BOTH Nutcracker and CYB’s Spring Production


FEE: There is a $150 fee for Senior Company, Company and Apprentice Membership. This is in addition to the $200 Performance Fee for EACH production.


MASTER CLASSES: CYB will hold 2 Master classes for Company and Apprentice Membership during the 2021-2022 season. Attendance is required.


WARM UP CLASSES: Senior Company and Company dancers are REQUIRED to attend the warm up classes, including pointe work, during production week with the professional guest artists. Apprentice dancers are invited to attend provided there is enough space for all to dance safely.


OUTREACH: CYB has outreach and additional performance opportunities. Participation is required of all Company and Apprentice dancers. Examples of outreach include the Southern Christmas Show in November and Carmel Country Club in December.


CODE OF CONDUCT All Dancers are expected to adhere to the CYB Code of Conduct at all times. (INSERT HYPERLINK)
FUNDRAISING: Company and Apprentice dancers are required to participate in all fundraising efforts each season. This includes promoting CYB whenever possible.


JACKET: Dancers receive a personalized jacket their FIRST year of acceptance into CYB’s COMPANY. Apprentice dancers do not receive a jacket.





Rehearsal Information


Once a dancer accepts a part with the Charlotte Youth Ballet, he/she will be expected to arrive on time for ALL rehearsals and be dressed appropriately. We recognize that emergencies or illness may arise and will excuse ONE (1) absence. After a second absence, your dancer can expect to be replaced by an understudy for one or more performances without refunding any fees.


DATES Every weekend beginning October 1, 2021 up through Production Week, December 1 – December 5, 2021. There are no rehearsals Thanksgiving Weekend.
COMPULSORY REHEARSALS In-Studio Dress Rehearsal – Weekend of November 12 – 14, 2021 (by scheduled section)

Tech Rehearsal at Halton Theatre – Wednesday, December 1, 2021 (evening)

Dress Rehearsal at Halton Theatre – Thursday, December 2, 2021 (evening)

ATTIRE Girls: Black spaghetti strapped leotard, pink tights, ballet or pointe shoes, hair in a neat bun, no skirts or leg warmers.

Boys: Black tights, solid colored t-shirt, black or white ballet shoes.

SCHEDULE A detailed Rehearsal Schedule will be published to the CYB website by September 27, 2021. Please note that the schedule is SUBJECT TO CHANGE. You MUST check the weekly email for all updates.

(Spring show generally follows a similar format)

Friday Evenings – Most non-pointe parts as well as some soloists.

Saturday Afternoons – All pointe parts, some non-pointe parts such as Ginger Children

Sunday Afternoons – Party Adults, Party Children, Toy Shop

Dancers are only asked to stay for their assigned times. They do not stay the entire evening/afternoon.


Performance Information


Please be certain that there are NO calendar conflicts BEFORE making your commitment to CYB. Dancers are expected to be available for ALL performances, NO EXCEPTIONS!

OUTREACH There are outreach performances and some roles are required to attend. CYB will notify you if you are in these shows.

SCHOOL SHOWS Friday, December 3, 2021 at 9:00 and 11:00 – Please note that these shows are shortened to accommodate our visiting schools and some dances will be cut from each show. However, the same section will not be cut from both school shows and your dancer will dance in one if not both shows.
FULL PERFORMANCES Friday, December 3, 2021 at 7:00

Saturday, December 4, 2021 at 2:00 and 7:00

Sunday, December 5, 2021 at 2:30

Dancer and Family Requirements and Commitments


PRODUCTIONS All dancers must be available for all performances. Dancers are cast as needed according to technique and ability. If a dancer is cast in more than one role, they MUST accept ALL roles that are offered.


REHEARSALS Dancers are expected to arrive on-time, dressed, warmed up and ready to dance. They should make notes as necessary to remember what is covered as there isn’t time to re-teach. Attendance is a priority and more than one absence will result in reduced performance time or removal from the production without refunding any fees.


VOLUNTEERISM Each family is required to serve on a volunteer team, especially during the performance weekend. We are firm about this commitment because CYB is run exclusively by volunteers and without them we simply couldn’t function. There are a wide variety of options to suit nearly any interest and schedule. Volunteers working directly with our youth are required to complete a background check. Please CLICK HERE to view the volunteer teams and a brief description of each. Families who cannot meet the volunteer requirement will be assessed a $350 fee. Fees assessed must be paid prior to future CYB participation.


TICKET SALES Each family is required to sell a MINIMUM of five (5) performance tickets for the Nutcracker regardless of family participation in patron campaigns. Families who cannot meet the ticket sale requirement will be assessed a $100 fee. Fees assessed must be paid prior to future CYB participation.


FUNDRAISERS/ PROMOTIONS All dancers are expected to participate in fundraising. As a non-profit arts company for youth, we rely on everyone to share our news and events with the community.

OUTREACH Outreach performances are an important part of the CYB mission. Dancers cast in roles participate in community outreach performances and are and required to perform in these shows.
